Different styles of thesis writing

When it comes to writing a thesis there are many different styles that can be followed. The style that has to be followed is usually not up to the researcher. One of the popular styles that are followed in the social sciences is the APA or American Psychological Association style while students who are doing a PhD in humanities like to follow the MLA or Modern Language Association style.

Another popular style of formatting is the Chicago Manual of Style. It is also referred to as the Turabian Style. Students who are completing their PhD in humanities based subjects like to use this style for their report. This manual has laid down in great detail how writers need to tackle different areas of their report and what kind of formatting they need to follow when they are handling their manuscript. Most of the aspects of this style have plenty in common with the APA and the MLA style. Those who know those two styles will not struggle to learn the Turabian method. Aspects like the font size, margins and font type are all the same. It is recommended that the font size should be 12 and the type should preferably be Times New Roman. The margins need to be set at one inch. One of the aspects that students need to pay a lot of importance to is the title page. There are always subtle differences in the way the title is used across different styles. If a student is used to one style of formatting, he might not notice these subtle differences and continue using the old method.

This is where careful study of the various styles is needed so that one can spot these differences and use them in the best manner possible. The title in the Turabian style needs to be centred and be printed a third of the way down the page. The name and the class information should be given several lines later. Each style has its own way of providing quotations, bibliography and citations. This is where the author and the editor should be very thorough with the format, so that they can make sure that no mistakes are made, advertently or inadvertently.
